The recent rainfall on September 27 and 28 posed challenges but also opportunities for Nepal’s floriculture sector. Although some marigold (Sayapatri) flowers in early bloom were affected, demand for these beautiful garlands remains strong as the Tihar festival approaches. This year, prices of Sayapatri garlands are anticipated to increase slightly to reflect the strong market demand for fresh flowers.
To help meet this demand, a substantial number of garlands are being imported from India. The Nepal Floriculture Association expects a rise in demand this Tihar season, with the Kathmandu Valley requiring a large portion of the flowers. Despite some challenges in local production, flower farming is expanding into many other districts, a positive sign of growth in the industry.
Annual demand for flower garlands continues to increase significantly, and while production growth is a bit slower, the expansion across Nepal is promising. The rising interest in floriculture in many areas not only meets increasing demand but strengthens Nepal’s position as a thriving cultural flower producer. The floriculture industry looks forward to a vibrant Tihar season, providing flowers that symbolize the beauty and joy of the festival.
